Windows 10 - It's great and dumb at the same time!

So I'm sitting here at the UniSA City East campus waiting for people to show up to ALAS so why not bash out a Blaugust post?

I'm using my Macbook freshly upgraded to Windows 10 and all is well so far. A few settings I've had to tweak but so far so good. First off you definitely want to shrink that search box on the taskbar. A simple right click on the taskbar will sort that out. Not too hard at all. Other issues were a bit for tricky. I had to reinstall my Boot Camp drivers to be able to control the media keys on my Mac. But the brightness of my screen was screwed. Turns out there's this setting which was around since Windows 8 to have the screen automatically adjust brightness which is fine if it worked. It just screws with me so that HAD to be disabled. It's hidden away in the "Power Options" in the control panel which you can get to by right clicking the icon in the system tray. Not the "Power & Sleep Settings" you get to by left clicking the same icon. Two different settings screens! Yuck! That's a hang on from Windows 8 they definitely should have fixed by now! Good thing I've already learned the "UI Eccentricities" of Windows 8 so I wasn't going in uninitiated. But apart from that, everything is fine so far.

The boot of my car also contains an assortment of computer hardware that I plan on assembling into a computer over the space of the next twenty four hours. That will probably have Windows 10 on it as well if they're still honouring the free upgrade just like they should be. I discovered that you can get the upgrade done when you want to install it rather than waiting for your turn to install it by using Microsoft's download tool. I think you still need to reserve a copy but I'll try the option to do a fresh install on the new desktop.

Now let’s talk about ponies!

…and there goes my readers!

But I’m actually serious. I had a song stuck in my head all day and it was from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. That show I talked about way back last year. But I didn’t just want to leave it at that. I knew that I was probably going to so some MLP fanboying anyway so it may as well have some structure.

There are 6 major characters to the MLP:FIM series. The “Mane Six” as it were (this show is full of glorious puns. There’s even cities named WHINNYapelos, MANEhatten FILLYdelhipa and for goodness sake!) one of the craziest of them is Pinkie Pie. She’s the self confessed party pony and loves making everyone feel happy. This can only be displayed in a brilliant musical number from the show that I have stuck in my head.

Pinkies role is pretty much as the comic relief as she’s always breaking out into song and dance, goofing off and usually abiding by the laws of cartoon physics. But why is she like this? Because she grew up on a rock farm of course. What? that answer wasn’t satisfying enough? Well it was boring place and one day she decided to throw a party for her family to liven the rock farm up. She discovered she had a special talent for it and has been doing it ever since. She’s one of the best party ponies around. Though there was one who tried to steal that title from her.

Weird Al Yankovic? Yes! Weird Al Yankovic! Or more specifically Wierd Al acting as a guest star of the role of Cheese Sandwich, a traveling party pony. He came into town sing and dancing, swept everypony off their hooves and tried to take over one of Pinkies parties she was organising.  Of course Pinkie was having none of that and eventually challenged him to a goof off.

In short, Pinkie is awesome! But she’s not even my favourite character. We’ll leave that for another time. Fo now I’ll just leave you with her impersonation of Pitchy!

Here we go again…

So day 2 has hit and I am pretty much exhausted. There was a footy game today at the Adelaide Oval and I was there screaming and carrying on as god old Port Adelaide won against the Saints. Was alot of fun and it’s great stress relief to be honest. Feels good to cheer every goal, show my disgust when the opposition are playing dirty. And yes, I did boo only when appropriate. The less we all hear about the Adam Goodes saga, the better.

Apart from that I haven’t really done much today. Watched some of The Simpsons. I’m trying to watch it all from the beginning. I’m currently on the third season which is where it really started to become a hilarious show. The fist few seasons had a special charm to them that gradually faded whist the humorous content began to increase.

Tomorrow I have my long day of uni. Three hours of Software Engineering Project lectures, two hours of Operation Systems lectures and two hours of Distributed Systems lectures. So fitting in Blaugust post is going to be interesting. I have a two hour break but there is always the time in the evening as well I guess. But I know I’ll be worn out to do a really good big one tomorrow. I really want to rest now as well despite knowing that there’s still plenty of hours left in today. If I sleep right this second (7:30 PM) I’ll probably be awake from 4 in the morning tomorrow so I know I have to keep myself occupied somehow. There’s always gaming. I could try setting up my WiiU into my fancy schmancy monitor and playing Mario 3D World or Splatoon or something. I’ve finally had an opportunity to play the games I’ve not been playing for the last few months because of a certain convention taking up my time.

I’m pretty sure all of these posts are going to be all over the place if I keep doing them like this. But I don’t really care how they turn out to be honest. I didn’t even bother proofreading my last one at all. Turns out there was typos EVERYWHERE. I had a huge headache so I couldn’t be bothered correcting it. But I have been reading everyone else’s posts too so far which is something I will be spending a lot more attention on doing this time around. That song Kevin translated was simply gorgeous. Ale’s Splatoon Squid Pins were cool. Hearing that Mark is feeling brilliant about AVCon is great, Thom’s back playing his Wesnoth and that recipe… oh god that recipe! Paul’s post actually wants me to try our LARPing (which I’ve still yet to do). Hang in there Laura. People like you are a rare breed and you should feel proud that you care so much. And last of all, Pitchy’s post on gaming and fun is simply something to behold!

I feel like my posts, just rambling on like I am right now, tame in comparison. But I like that it doesn’t really matter. I’m ok with no major topic of discussion. Perhaps you’ll just get to find out more about me, what make me tick and why I am the way that I am.

31 Blaugust Posts You Must See to Believe! - Number 14 is hilarious!

So the month of August has come around heralding a new start to my Blaugusting adventures. I had a template last year with my alphabetical journey but I didn’t really want to do that again. Partly because it was a bit stressful trying to find something to write about every day but also because I was a bit limited by what I could actually talk about. So I thought I’d just go with an “anything goes” attitude.

Which is why I’m sitting here with absolutely no idea what to write about. Guess it’s going to be a stream of consciousness post today then.

I guess I could talk about my new monitor I got at an auction yesterday. It’s a Dell Ultrasharp 2408WFP if that means anything to you. It’s got a screen resolution of 1920x1200 is 24 inches and 16:10. Full HD with some extra height basically. As far as inputs goes it has Display Port, HDMI, 2 DVI’s, D-Sub, Component, S-Video and Composite! That’s a lot of inputs! It also has 4 USB 2.0 ports, SD card and Compact Flash reader. And I don’t have to mention that it looks amazing! Considering I managed to get it for a little under $80 I am incredibly happy.

It’s going to be part of my new PC i’m putting together some time this week. I’ll probably go more in depth into it when I gat it built. Basically I’m putting together something I can game, code and do audio production on. So when someone told me there was an auction on some stuff to happen on Friday I jumped at anticipation. When I went to collect it I was told that it came from the ABC Collinswood studio. So I guess that’s who their managing their budget efficiencies. If my account had way more money at the time I would have got three of them and rocked a triple monitor setup. Not fully possible now but there may be opportunities in the future. I’d need a new desk if that were to happen realistically. 

I guess I should make some plans as to what I’m going to talk about over the month. So for I have one idea, but I didn’t find it appropriate to do it just yet. Give me time and it will happen though. Perhaps I could write some topics and pull one out of a hat if I need some inspiration. I could always go on about what Anime i’ve been watching lately or Eurovision. There’s ALWAYS time for Eurovision!  A quiz would be novel but that’s definitely Thom’s domain. But I know you most definitely won’t see me writing about AVCon this time around. That’s a Pandoras box that fully deserves to stay shut and it’s the off period anyway.

Perhaps I could cook more and talk about that? I used to be really into cooking but I’ve kinda backed off these last few years. Mainly because of the company I’ve been keeping around the house. There’s always someone (usually of the parent variety) that has to interrupt with a list of obvious questions. What are you making? Are you making soup? What’s in it? Are those mushrooms you’re cutting? How long is it going to take? Are you going to wash up? It stops being fun when that happens. I’ve already put myself off again! It’s so much easier when their away for whatever reason and I have the house free. None of that stuff ever become a problem. Naturally I start cooking on a daily basis to make up for lost time. You’re probably wondering why I don’t just cook for my parents every now and then? The answer could easily be it’s own post. So I guess there’s another day covered then?

Well either way it’s going to be an eventful month of writing things. If you want me to talk about specific  things then I’m open to suggestions. But until then,
